A GREAT PROMPT
HAS SIX PARTS.

Stop typing questions. Write a brief. Every part below removes one reason the model would guess — and guessing is what a bad answer really is.

Role

Tell the model who it is. A role loads the vocabulary, standards and judgement you want it to use.

You are a senior financial analyst who writes for non-finance founders.

Goal

State the outcome, not the activity. One sentence, measurable, with the reader named.

Goal: a one-page memo that helps our sales team answer pricing objections.

Context

Paste the raw material — data, transcript, brand voice, past examples. Most bad answers are missing context, not intelligence.

Here is last quarter's revenue table and three recent customer emails: <…>

Format

Describe the shape of the output: sections, length, table columns, tone, what to leave out.

Output: markdown, 5 bullets max per section, no adjectives, end with 3 open questions.

Constraints

Rules and guardrails. Say what is off-limits and what to do when information is missing.

Use only numbers from the table. If a figure is missing, write UNKNOWN — never estimate.

One or two samples of a good answer teach the model more than a paragraph of instructions.

06 — The framework

FIVE STEPS FROM BLANK BOX TO BEST RESULT.

  1. Step 1

    Set the role and the goal

    Open with who the model is and what success looks like for a named reader. Vague openings produce generic answers.

    You are a technical recruiter. Goal: a 120-word outreach note that gets a reply from senior React engineers.

  2. Step 2

    Load the context

    Give the model everything a new hire would need: source data, prior work, voice samples, the decision being made.

    Context: our job post, two engineers' profiles, and the two notes that worked last month.

  3. Step 3

    Define the output

    Specify structure, length, tone and format before you ask for anything. This is where most quality is won.

    Output: subject line + 3 short paragraphs, plain English, no buzzwords, one clear ask.

  4. Step 4

    Add constraints and an example

    Fence off failure modes, then show one gold-standard sample so the model can pattern-match instead of guess.

  5. Step 5

    Critique, then iterate

    Ask the model to grade its own answer against your goal, list what is weak, and rewrite. Two loops beats one long prompt.

    Score that draft 1–10 on reply-likelihood, name the weakest line, then rewrite it.

Goal: a LinkedIn post that makes operations managers message me about our route-planning tool.

Context: last month we cut a client's delivery time 22% by re-sequencing 140 daily stops. Their dispatcher used to plan routes on paper.

Format: 120–150 words, first person, one concrete number in the first line, short lines, no hashtags, end with a question.

Constraints: no words like "revolutionary", "game-changer", "leverage". Do not invent numbers beyond the ones above.

Result — A specific, credible story with a number in line one, written in your voice — the version that actually starts conversations.

09 — Failure modes

Asking a question instead of writing a brief.

A question gets an answer. A brief — role, goal, context, format — gets work you can actually use.

Withholding the context.

The model cannot see your data, your client, or last week's draft. Paste it in. Length is not the enemy; vagueness is.

Never saying what the output should look like.

If you don't define format, length and tone, the model picks the safest average of the internet.

Giving up after the first answer.

The first output is a draft. Critique it, name the weak part, ask for a targeted rewrite. That loop is the whole skill.
